Some think English is all reading and writing. We, as teachers, beg to differ. While it may seem this is so, it only takes a quick tour through our wonderful classrooms to be reminded there is a whole lot more than that occurring here. Take a look. Spot your work!
This WILL be worth watching. Members of the Environmental Committee, headed by the very capable Emily McCarthy, have organised a battle of words against three staff members next Tuesday, the 5th of August.
The moot is yet to be announced but will be an issue current to environmentalists. Come along and watch 'Captain McCann', 'Hard Hitting Hendra' and 'Valentine the Brave', (a.k.a Mrs McCann, Mr Hendra and Mrs Valentine), take on Emily McCarthy, Janetta Kim and Melanie Duff. We recently hosted an Inter-college debating competition. The event was a huge success with 17 teams entered. While we were disappointed not to retain the senior debating cup, we were proud of the effort of all five of our teams who entered. Boy can teenagers argue! Read the Bay of Plenty Times article about the senior final debate here. Every one of our junior students has a writing journal that is put to good use over the year. In this journal students will learn how to and practice brainstorming, drafting, crafting and editing wonderful pieces of writing in a variety of genres. Mrs Rumney's Year 10 English class has been exploring the school environment in the hope that it will prompt the flowing of creative juices. Here they are enjoying the natural space of the 'gully' while they experiment with language. In 2011 the block of the school we reside in, 'B' Block, was remodeled. During the process, the Year 13 cohort decided their gift to the school would be a sculpture that would be installed in the foyer of the new block. The concept for Toku Reo, Toku Ohooho was jointly the brainchild of Mrs Sally McCann (English HOD) and Mrs Tania Rickard (Art teacher). Mrs Lewis-Rickard and her husband were commissioned to complete the artwork which now hangs majestically above our classrooms. |
