There are so many reasons why it is important for you to be aware of the world around you. You need to made informed statements and arguments, to write perceptively about texts you study and how they relate to contentious issues. You need to be empathetic showing an understanding of how others may feel in particular situations and therefore how they may be presented in different texts you encounter. You need to be able to write commanding pieces of text yourself in which you present your educated views about issues in your wider community and the world.
